Former BJP district president Nagen Choudhury has formally entered the race for the party’s candidature from the 26 No. Bajali Legislative Assembly constituency, as per sources.
Sources indicate that nearly 45 organisations and institutions from the Bajali constituency have already written letters of support to Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, endorsing Choudhury as their preferred candidate.
Choudhury brings with him three decades of association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a background that has shaped his organisational grounding and ideological commitment. Over the years, he has served twice as district president, playing a pivotal role in strengthening the party’s grassroots structure in the region. Party insiders credit him with consolidating booth-level networks and expanding outreach initiatives across Bajali.
His political journey has not been without challenges. During the protests surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act, Choudhury openly supported the party’s stand, even as large-scale agitations swept across parts of Assam. Reports suggest that he faced harassment during demonstrations led by various student organisations, yet remained steadfast in his loyalty to the party and its leadership.
Supporters argue that his consistent commitment, organisational experience, and long-standing ideological alignment make him a strong contender capable of mobilising both party workers and voters in the constituency. They also highlight his reputation for discipline and unwavering dedication during politically turbulent times.
