In a disturbing incident that unfolded late at night on October 29, in North Krishnapur, Cachar, a man was allegedly caught attempting to desecrate a grave and remove a corpse for alleged ritualistic practices.
Local residents raised an alarm after finding the man digging a grave. An enraged crowd subdued and questioned him before handing him over to the authorities.
The accused, identified as Ajib Uddin from Shildubi, was discovered at the graveyard while trying to unearth the body of Fakhruddin, a local resident who had passed away just 29 days earlier.
According to reports, Fakhruddin’s son, while passing by the cemetery, noticed two individuals digging up his father’s grave. Shocked and horrified, he quickly raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents who rushed to the scene.
Although they managed to apprehend Uddin, his accomplice managed to flee. Under interrogation, Uddin revealed that he and his partner, identified as Saddam Hussein, were attempting to retrieve the body.
Speaking to India Today NE, Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said, "Yes, the person identified as Ajib Uddin has been arrested. But as per our information, the man is not mentally stable. He was not digging the grave to pull out the body but wanted the soil from the grave for some rituals. An investigation has been initiated in the case and his family members have been informed about the incident, while we are also trying to study his family background".
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked tension in the area. Approximately a year ago, a similar grave desecration incident occurred in the same cemetery, during which a woman’s body was exhumed, and her head was reportedly stolen by unidentified individuals.
Following the latest incident, an agitated crowd assaulted Uddin before handing him over to the police. Rangirkhari Police Station in Silchar has registered a case, and an investigation is underway to apprehend the second individual involved.
