Assam man arrested in wife's suicide case over alleged dowry harassment and extramarital affair

Police have arrested a man in connection with the alleged abetment of his wife's suicide in Assam's Goalpara district, following allegations of dowry harassment, domestic abuse and an extramarital affair.
The accused, identified as Rabial Molla was arrested by Jaleswar Police in connection with the death of his wife, Julekha Khatun, a resident of Gaurnagar Shalbari 1st Part village under Jaleswar Police Outpost.
According to the victim's family, Julekha and Rabial were married around five years ago following social customs. However, they alleged that soon after the marriage, Rabial subjected her to physical and mental abuse and repeatedly demanded a motorcycle and cash as dowry.
The family further alleged that while working outside the state, Rabial developed an extramarital relationship with another woman and sent objectionable videos of the relationship to Julekha, causing her severe mental distress.
Unable to cope with the alleged harassment and emotional trauma, Julekha died by suicide at her matrimonial home on November 16, 2025, the family claimed.
Following the incident, Rabial had reportedly been absconding. Police arrested him on the night of August 1.
A case has been registered as Case No. 69/26 under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). After being produced before a court, the accused was remanded to judicial custody.
Police said the investigation into the case is underway.
