A 30-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Assam’s Bongaigaon district after facing repeated harassment from moneylenders over loan repayment, according to a complaint filed by his family.
The deceased, identified as Azid Ali of Nayagaon in Jogighopa, allegedly jumped in front of a moving train near the Haripani railway gate in Chalatapara on the night of October 1.
His family has alleged that financial pressure and repeated mental harassment by two local moneylenders preceded his death. An FIR has been lodged at Abhayapuri police station naming Babul Hussain and Iman Ali, both residents of Nayagaon.
According to the complaint, Azid had borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh from Babul Hussain and another Rs 40,000 from Iman Ali at an alleged interest rate of 10 per cent. The family claimed that Azid had been paying the monthly interest but continued to face pressure from the lenders.
The allegations have surfaced following his death, with his family claiming that the continued harassment left him under severe mental distress.
Azid is survived by his nine-month pregnant wife. His brother, Hanif Ali, has lodged the FIR and sought action against those named in the complaint.
