A 37-year-old man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident late at night on February 24 in Assam’s Boko, triggering concern over rising cases of reckless driving and unidentified vehicles on state highways. The victim, identified as Sukumar Basumatary, succumbed to his injuries after being referred to Guwahati for advanced treatment.
The fatal accident took place at Nagopara in Boko under unclear circumstances. Basumatary, a resident of Bhogdabari village in Boko, was reportedly returning home on his motorcycle when an unidentified vehicle is suspected to have struck him before fleeing the scene.
Local residents alerted authorities after discovering him critically injured on the roadside. Personnel from Boko Police reached the spot the same night and rushed him to Boko Primary Health Centre. However, given the severity of his injuries, doctors referred him to Guwahati for specialised care.
Basumatary was later admitted to Swagat Hospital in Guwahati, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.
Police recovered a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle bearing registration number AS 14L 4230 from the accident site, further confirming that the victim was travelling alone at the time of the incident. Authorities have launched an investigation to identify and trace the vehicle involved in the suspected hit-and-run.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over nighttime road safety and the urgent need for stricter monitoring of vehicular movement in semi-urban and rural stretches of Assam.
