Boko Police rescued 40 cattle during an operation at Jarighat-Majebari along the Assam-Meghalaya border following a tip-off about suspected cattle smuggling, officials said.
The operation was conducted on suspicion that the cattle were being illegally transported from Assam through Meghalaya towards Bangladesh.
However, four suspected traders allegedly involved in the operation fled the spot before police could apprehend them.
The raid was led by Munna Pasoni, Officer-in-Charge of Boko Police Station, and Atul Deka, in-charge of Hahim Police Outpost.
Police recovered the cattle during the operation, while an investigation is underway to identify those allegedly involved and establish the suspected smuggling network.
The incident has once again brought attention to alleged illegal cattle transportation along the Assam-Meghalaya border and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in monitoring vulnerable border routes.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly emphasised action against illegal cattle transportation in the state. The latest operation forms part of police efforts to check suspected smuggling activities in the border region.
Further details regarding the ownership of the cattle and the next course of action are awaited.
