A wave of thefts has gripped the greater Merapani area of Golaghat district, Assam with religious institutions emerging as repeated targets of thieves. Over the past month, at least ten naamghars in the region have reportedly been burgled, raising serious concerns among local residents and temple authorities.
The latest incidents were reported on Tuesday, December 16 night, when thieves struck two prominent religious institutions in Merapani town—the Merapani Town Public Naamghar and the Merapani Kali Temple. Both establishments are located in close proximity to the Merapani Police Station, further intensifying public anxiety over security lapses.
According to preliminary information, the miscreants broke into the Kali Temple, which is currently under construction, and decamped with cash amounting to several lakhs of rupees from the donation box, along with various items used for religious rituals. At the Merapani Town Public Naamghar, thieves allegedly made away with money from the donation box as well as several valuable brass and bell-metal articles.
Following complaints lodged by local residents and managing committees, the Merapani police have initiated an investigation into the incidents. Police sources said efforts are underway to identify those involved and recover the stolen items. The repeated targeting of religious institutions has sparked widespread concern in the area, with residents demanding enhanced security measures to prevent further incidents
