A law-and-order situation surfaced in Assam’s Dhubri town on Tuesday, march 17 evening after the son of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Nazrul Hoque was allegedly involved in an altercation that escalated into a physical assault on a local resident, triggering widespread outrage among locals.
The incident reportedly unfolded when Amitabh Nandy, a resident of the town, found his residential gate blocked by a vehicle alleged belonging to the MLA’s son. According to eye witness accounts, Nandy approached those present and requested that the vehicle be moved to allow him access to his own premises.
However, the situation quickly turned confrontational. A private security guard, identified as Ali and said to be a resident of Cooch Behar in West Bengal, allegedly intervened and engaged in a heated exchange with Nandy. The verbal altercation soon escalated into physical violence, with the guard accused of pushing Nandy to the ground and manhandling him.
Eyewitnesses claimed that Nandy sustained visible injuries, including marks on his neck. In the immediate aftermath of the scuffle, the MLA’s son reportedly left the scene, while the security personnel remained behind.
The episode has sparked strong reactions from residents, many of whom expressed alarm over what they described as “high-handed behaviour” and the alleged use of private “bouncers” to assert influence.
“It is deeply concerning that a resident cannot even ask for his gate to be cleared without being physically assaulted,” said a local eyewitness.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, and it remains unclear whether a formal complaint has been registered.
