A member of Parliament has called for immediate government intervention after a key national highway in Assam deteriorated to dangerous levels, leaving thousands of daily travellers at risk.
Amarsing Tisso, who represents Diphu (ST) constituency, used the Winter Session of Parliament to challenge Union Minister Nitin Gadkari over the alarming state of National Highway-29, which connects Doboka Junction to Lahorijan.
The MP described poorly constructed road surfaces, significant structural damage, thick dust pollution and multiple safety hazards threatening motorists along the route.
The highway serves as a critical link between central Assam and the hill districts, making its deterioration particularly concerning for regional connectivity. Tisso pressed the minister for answers on why construction standards had failed and demanded that agencies responsible for the shoddy work be held accountable.
The MP outlined specific remedial measures needed, including a comprehensive technical assessment of the damaged sections and complete resurfacing work to restore safe passage. His intervention has drawn support from local residents, who have long complained about the road's condition and questioned why infrastructure in tribal areas fails to meet national standards.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is now expected to dispatch inspection teams to assess the damage firsthand and establish a timeline for essential repairs. Communities along the route are hoping for swift action to address what they describe as years of neglect on a strategically important transport corridor.
