A man accused of brutally murdering his wife died after allegedly jumping from a moving police vehicle while he was being taken to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a medical examination early Monday, September 14, police said.
DCP (East) Tabu Ram Pegu said the accused, Ramanuj Goswami, was in police custody and had been remanded to seven days of police custody at Hatigaon Police Station in connection with the murder case.
According to Pegu, Goswami was being taken to GMCH around 2 am for a medical examination when the police vehicle developed a tyre problem.
“The tyre got punctured and was replaced with the spare tyre,” Pegu said.
After the journey resumed, the vehicle reached near the nursing college when Goswami allegedly attacked the escorting constable, kicked him forcefully and opened the rear door of the vehicle.
He then allegedly jumped out of the moving vehicle and fell on the road, sustaining severe injuries.
The police team immediately attended to him and rushed him to GMCH, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police said Goswami's family members have been informed about the death.
The circumstances leading to the incident are now under investigation, with police saying all required legal formalities are being completed.
The incident occurred while Goswami was in custody in connection with the investigation into the murder of his wife.
Police are continuing to examine the sequence of events, including the vehicle's tyre puncture, the subsequent replacement of the tyre and the accused's alleged attempt to escape.
