A section of a newly constructed bridge over the Dalu River in the Sonachara area of Udharbond has collapsed following heavy overnight rainfall, severely affecting connectivity and causing hardship for residents of several nearby villages.
According to local sources, the collapse has virtually cut off road access to Sonachara, Amranagar, Satyanagar and Sirishthal, disrupting daily life and transportation in the region. Residents said the damage has created significant difficulties for commuters, particularly school and college students, while access to essential services has also been affected.
The incident has sparked anger among local residents, who have questioned the quality of the bridge construction and the response of the authorities. Villagers alleged that despite multiple inspections by Udharbond MLA Rajdeep Goala and officials from the concerned department, no effective measures were taken to address the issues that had reportedly emerged earlier.
Locals fear that the situation could worsen further and potentially lead to a major accident if immediate steps are not taken. They stressed that repeated inspections alone are not enough and called for concrete action to restore connectivity and ensure public safety.
Residents of the affected areas have demanded urgent repair of the damaged bridge section and the implementation of necessary protective measures. They have also appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene directly and ensure a swift resolution to the crisis.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the timeline for restoration work.
