Assam: One arrested over alleged broker nexus at Katigorah Sub-Registrar's Office

Police have arrested a person in connection with allegations of a broker nexus operating at the Katigorah Sub-Registrar's Office in Cachar district.

The arrest of Shakib Ahmed Barbhuiya was made on Sunday evening, August 30, following a written complaint submitted by four persons, including Sandeep Kumar Nath, president of the ruling party's Yuva Morcha, police said.

A case bearing number 64/2026 has been registered under Sections 61, 136 and 308(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the allegations.

According to the complaint, a section of brokers allegedly collected amounts significantly higher than the government-prescribed fees from people seeking services related to marriage registration and land transactions.

The complainants alleged that the government fee for marriage registration is around Rs 560, while some people were allegedly charged between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000.

There are also allegations that unauthorised deed writers and brokers have been operating from the office premises and facilitating various official procedures.

The allegations have gained attention following the circulation of videos on social media purportedly showing activities linked to the alleged broker network.

Police have initiated an investigation into the allegations and the role of those allegedly involved.

Meanwhile, affected residents and concerned citizens have demanded strict action against the alleged broker nexus and called for a transparent and public-friendly environment at the Katigorah Sub-Registrar's Office.
