In a striking example of communal harmony, a Hindu candidate has emerged victorious in a Panchayat election from a ward overwhelmingly dominated by Muslim voters in Sribhumi district.
Ward No. 2 of the Narayanpur Gaon Panchayat, under the Patharkandi constituency, witnessed a closely followed contest between Mohitosh Bhattacharjee (Partha), supported by the Communist Party of India (CPI), and Sultana Parbin, backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
What makes the result extraordinary is the demographic composition of the area: out of nearly 886 voters, 878 are Muslim while only 8 belong to the Hindu community. Despite this, Bhattacharjee secured a decisive 411 votes, significantly ahead of Parbin, who received 214 votes.
Bhattacharjee’s win is being widely seen as a testament to the mutual respect and secular spirit upheld by the local residents. In his post-election remarks, the newly elected ward member extended heartfelt thanks to the Muslim community for their trust and support.
