Assam police arrest two fake Crime Investigation Department officials from Rajasthan

Bongaigaon Police have arrested two alleged fraudsters from Rajasthan for posing as senior officials of a purported Crime Investigation Department (CID/CIB) and extorting money from dairy distributors in Assam.

The accused have been identified as Baldev Singh and Balram Choudhary, who allegedly introduced themselves as the State Director and Assistant Manager of the "Crime Investigation Department" under the Government of India.

According to police, the duo had been targeting milk distributors in the Kokila area by threatening them with legal action and falsely claiming to be officials of a central crime investigation agency. Investigators said the accused used their fake identities to intimidate unsuspecting victims and allegedly extort money.

Acting on specific inputs, Bongaigaon Police launched an operation and apprehended both accused.

During the operation, police seized several incriminating items from their possession, including two luxury vehicles bearing registration numbers RJ 04 DK 6344 and RJ 14 GU 6398, four mobile phones, fake identity cards and ATM cards.

Addressing a press conference on July 22, Bongaigaon Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta said the arrests had exposed a racket involving individuals impersonating officials of a crime investigation agency to defraud members of the public.

Police are investigating whether the accused were involved in similar frauds elsewhere in Assam or other states and are probing the authenticity of the seized identity documents.

Further investigation is underway.
