The Assam Police launched a statewide crackdown against suspected fraudsters, touts and conmen, with 20 people detained in Kokrajhar district during a night-long operation, police said.
The detainees were picked up from different areas under four police stations in the district.
Of the 20 people detained, eight were from areas under Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station, three under Bagribari Police Station, two under Fakiragram Police Station and seven under Gossaigaon Police Station, according to police.
The operation against suspected fraudsters and touts was continuing, officials said. Police have also launched an investigation into the matter.
The Kokrajhar action was part of a coordinated statewide crackdown across Assam, launched on the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Nearly 300 people have been detained across 29 districts as part of the operation targeting suspected fraudsters, touts and conmen.
The crackdown is focused on individuals allegedly involved in cheating people through fraudulent phone calls, messages and various forms of financial scams.
The statewide action comes against the backdrop of a reported rise in fraud-related cases being registered at police stations across Assam.
