Assam police opened fire during an investigation along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Patharkandi, injuring a human trafficker identified as Dilwar Hussain.
The accused, allegedly involved in smuggling individuals from Bangladesh into India, was apprehended during an operation led by local authorities.
According to police reports, Hussain was detained at Sribhumi railway station on suspicion of human trafficking. Interrogation revealed his role in facilitating the illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals through multiple border points in the region over the past six months.
Under the directive of Superintendent of Police (SP) Partha Pratim Das, the accused was taken to the Phulkandi area of the Patharkandi constituency for further investigation. During the site visit, Hussain reportedly attempted to snatch a firearm from the police, prompting officers to open fire. He sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, while two police personnel were also injured in the altercation. Hussain is currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
Hailing from Dharmanagar in Tripura, Hussain is suspected of being part of a broader human trafficking syndicate. SP Das disclosed that Hussain had allegedly facilitated the illegal entry of approximately 70 individuals into India via the Assam and Tripura borders. Authorities suspect that he operates within a larger network, and investigations into the syndicate are underway.
The case has been registered at Sri Bhumi Police Station (Case No. 21/25) under multiple sections of the BNS Act, including 61(2), 143, 145, 152, 336(3), and 340(2).
This incident has drawn attention to the effectiveness of border security measures. Over the past month, Sribhumi police have repatriated several Bangladeshi nationals who illegally entered India.
