Assam Police achieved a significant breakthrough by thwarting a rice theft attempt in the Sorih Chakla area of Bajali district under the jurisdiction of Patacharkuchi Police Station. The operation resulted in the arrest of one accused and the seizure of a vehicle allegedly used in the theft.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 3 am when a patrol team, led by ASI Shashanka Das of the Pathsala-Kochkuchi Police Station, noticed suspicious activity in front of a rice mill owned by local businessman Dipak Sharma. The team witnessed a group of individuals loading rice sacks into a Bolero goods vehicle.
Upon approaching the scene, the suspects attempted to flee. The police gave chase and managed to apprehend one of the accused, while others escaped under the cover of darkness. The arrested individual has been identified as Samir Uddin, a resident of Kapla Bari in Barpeta district.
The police also seized the Bolero vehicle used in the operation, bearing registration number AS 28C 7427.
Notably, this arrest comes amid a rising spate of rice thefts reported from multiple rice mills in the Bajali region in recent days, causing financial losses estimated in lakhs of rupees.
Following the incident, rice mill owner Dipak Sharma lodged an official complaint with the police, and further investigations are underway to trace the remaining culprits.
Police have assured that operations will continue to dismantle the network involved in the thefts.
