In a continued effort to curb illegal trade despite the state-wide ban, Assam Police arrested a suspected smuggler and seized nearly 200 kg of beef during a raid in Dhubri district on Thursday morning.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Officer-in-Charge Debajit Kalita of Golakganj Police Station conducted a pre-dawn operation at Biratnagar Chariali along National Highway 17. During the raid, they intercepted a numberless scooty en route to Gauripur. On being signaled to stop, the rider attempted to flee and crashed the vehicle while trying to escape.
Although the driver managed to evade arrest, one individual, identified as Azizur Rahman, a resident of Mansai under Bakshirhat Police Station in West Bengal, was apprehended at the scene. Upon inspection, officials discovered two quintals of banned beef concealed in the vehicle.
The seized vehicle and contraband were taken into custody, and further investigation is underway to identify and trace the wider network involved in cross-border beef smuggling.
The incident exposes the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in countering illegal meat trafficking from neighbouring West Bengal, despite the Assam government’s strict prohibition on the sale and transport of beef.
Police sources emphasized that such operations would continue as part of their intensified efforts to uphold the ban and curb illicit activities along the border regions.
