Assam's Sonitpur district witnessed high activity today, May 1 as polling officials began their departure from Darrang College campus, carrying essential election materials for the Panchayat elections scheduled tomorrow, May 2 across five assembly constituencies.
A total of 350 material cell officers handed over ballot boxes and other polling equipment to over 5,000 presiding and polling officers. These officials have now set off towards 842 polling stations, where 6,16,932 registered voters are expected to exercise their franchise.
The Panchayat elections in Sonitpur have drawn a robust contest, with 41 candidates vying for Zila Parishad seats, 155 in the fray for Anchalik Panchayat posts, and a significant 1,769 contesting for Gaon Sabha memberships. Interestingly, five candidates for the Zila Parishad, 36 for the Anchalik Panchayat, and 260 for Gaon Sabha posts have already been declared elected unopposed.
Voting will take place tomorrow across 206 polling stations in Dhekiajuli, 261 in Barchalla, 169 in Tezpur, 204 in Rangapara, and two wards in Naduar.
Additionally, 149 Gaon Sabha members are contesting in 17 Gaon Panchayats of Dhekiajuli, 189 in 22 Panchayats of Barchalla, 121 in 13 Panchayats of Tezpur, 156 in 17 Panchayats of Rangapara, and two members are in the fray in Naduar.
The district administration has confirmed that all necessary preparations have been completed to ensure smooth and peaceful polling across the region.
