A case of alleged gross negligence by the Power Department has come to light in Assam’s Bongaigaon district, after a contractual maintenance worker was critically injured while working on a live electric pole.
The incident occurred in Sajanabhita, where the victim, Jitendra Roy, was assigned maintenance work atop an electric pole under the assumption that the power supply had been safely disconnected.
However, in a serious safety lapse, the high-voltage line was still active, resulting in Roy receiving a powerful electric shock. The force of the current caused him to fall from the pole, and he sustained severe burn injuries to the lower half of his body.
Eyewitnesses alerted local authorities, and the injured worker was rushed to Bongaigaon Civil Hospital, where he remains in critical condition under intensive medical care.
The incident has sparked strong criticism from locals and labor rights activists, who are demanding a thorough inquiry into the department’s alleged failure to ensure basic safety protocols before assigning high-risk work.
As of now, no official statement has been released by the Power Department, and calls are growing louder for accountability and compensation for the victim and his family.
