A rare Golden Langur was killed in a road accident, following which local residents in Kadamtola, Bongaigaon, protested and blocked National Highway 117 on 3rd January. The incident occurred early in the morning when the animal was struck by a vehicle.
The protest, organised by community members, followed months of ongoing demands for better protection of the endangered species. Residents, alongside local organisations, have expressed concern over the rising number of Golden Langur deaths due to road accidents and electrocution.
This marks the fourth Golden Langur death in the region in the past two months, with similar incidents reported in December and January. Authorities have yet to implement effective measures to prevent such fatalities, despite calls for action from the local community.
The Golden Langur, an endangered species found in Assam, is known for its distinct golden-colored fur. Conservation efforts have been underway, but residents argue that more must be done to protect the animal, especially from hazards like traffic and electric wires.
Authorities have promised to investigate the incident and explore potential solutions to safeguard the species. The protest has since been dispersed, but the community remains firm in their demand for immediate action to prevent further loss of wildlife.
