Members of the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), along with hundreds of tea garden workers, staged a protest in front of Geleky Police Station in Assam’s Nazira on Wednesday, May 20, demanding the withdrawal of a police case registered against a local student leader.
The protest was organised against a case filed at the police station against Sanjay Gowala, president of the Nazira branch of ATTSA.
Demonstrators began assembling near the police station from around 8:30 am and later surrounded the premises as part of an intensified agitation. Protesters raised slogans and demanded immediate withdrawal of the case against Gowala.
Leaders and members of the organisation alleged that the case was unjustified and urged the authorities to resolve the matter at the earliest.
The protesters also warned of launching a larger movement if their demand is not met. According to the organisation, further agitation programmes may be announced in the coming days if no action is taken regarding the withdrawal of the case.
A large number of tea garden workers joined the demonstration in support of ATTSA, leading to heightened tension in the area during the protest.
