A public Sanghadana ceremony in honour of late Buddhist monk Indrabonsho Bhikkhu was held on Friday, November 28 at the Inthem Munggang Buddhist Vihar under Margherita Co-District. The tribute event was conducted with full adherence to the customs and principles of Theravada Buddhism.
A significant gathering of Buddhist monks, along with numerous devotees (upasakas) and female devotees (upasikas) from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, participated in the ceremony to pay their respects to the revered monk.
Indrabonsho Bhikkhu was allegedly murdered by unidentified miscreants, a case that has triggered widespread outrage within the Buddhist community. Multiple organisations, including the Purvanchal Bhikkhu Sangha, All Assam Buddhist Association, Federation of Barua Buddhist Welfare Association of Assam, and the Singpho Students’ Union, have submitted memorandums to the Margherita Co-District administration pressing for the immediate arrest of those responsible.
Public anger continues to escalate as no arrests have been made even after seven days since the incident. Community representatives have questioned the inaction of the Margherita Co-District administration and Tinsukia Police, urging swift action to bring justice to the slain monk.
Leaders of the Buddhist community have cautioned that if the authorities fail to arrest the culprits soon, the peace-loving Buddhist population of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will be compelled to launch a democratic mass movement to demand justice.
