Assam: Rice-laden vehicle seized in Bongaigaon’s Abhayapuri amid alleged illegal trade

Police seized a Tata Ultra vehicle allegedly carrying a large quantity of rice in Bongaigaon district’s Dumuria area, following information from local residents about its suspicious movement, officials said.

The vehicle, bearing registration number AS 19 AC 6020, was reportedly travelling towards Abhayapuri from the Lengtisiga side when it was found parked in a suspicious manner in the dark at Dumuria.

Local residents alerted the police, following which a team reached the spot and searched the vehicle. Police subsequently seized the vehicle after finding a large quantity of rice inside.

The vehicle has been taken to the police station and an investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the rice and identify those allegedly involved in its transportation.

According to local organisations, the illegal trade and transportation of rice has been continuing in Abhayapuri and surrounding areas for some time. They have previously raised the issue with the administration and called for action against those involved.

Police are conducting further inquiries into the alleged rice-smuggling network.
