In a unique initiative to encourage book reading among the people, street libraries have been set up under tree shades in Pathsala town, Bajali district of lower Assam. This innovative concept has sparked a reading revolution over the past month, catching the attention of students and passersby alike.
The Udayan Sangha, a socio-cultural and sporting organisation established in 1972, has set up two street libraries – one in front of the electricity office and another near the prestigious Bhattadev University. This initiative was made possible with the support of the Bajali district police administration.
The concept was introduced by Additional Superintendent of Police, Bajali, Trinayan Bhuyan, who collaborated with the Bajali Police in this mission. The majority of the books were donated by locals, contributing to the greater interest of readers.
Students from Bhattadev University, Krishnakanta Handique Jr College, and many other institutions have embraced this opportunity, flocking to these libraries to read books under the shade of trees.
These innovative libraries, housed in waterproof and electricity-equipped small cupboards, offer a convenient haven for book lovers. Located alongside footpaths, they provide an inviting space for readers to indulge in literary pursuits during brief moments of respite.
Functioning as self-service libraries, readers can borrow books after making an entry in the provided register and return them after proper documentation.
This initiative not only promotes the joy of reading but also fosters a sense of community engagement and accessibility to literature. The street libraries have become a popular destination for book enthusiasts, offering a unique and refreshing way to embrace the world of books while enjoying the great outdoors.
