Assam school row: Teacher’s ‘99% alcoholics’ remark triggers protest

Tension prevailed at a private school in Assam’s Nagaon district after a mathematics teacher allegedly made objectionable remarks targeting students from Kathiatoli, triggering protests from parents and students.

The incident took place at Matrix Senior Secondary School, where mathematics teacher Prashanta Bora allegedly made controversial remarks about students from Kathiatoli, including those belonging to the Tiwa community.

According to the allegations, Bora claimed that “99 per cent of students from Kathiatoli are alcoholics and consume cannabis” and allegedly advised against marrying boys from the area.

The remarks reportedly angered students and parents, who objected to what they described as derogatory and offensive comments by a teacher.

As news of the incident spread, a group of aggrieved parents reached the school campus and confronted the teacher, demanding an explanation for his remarks.

With the situation turning tense, Bora reportedly admitted his mistake and publicly apologised for the comments.

The incident has triggered strong reactions in the area, with concerns being raised over the conduct of teachers and the impact of such remarks on students and communities.
