Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 3 said the first clean room at the Tata semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad is ready and pilot chip production has begun, marking a major step forward for the state's ambitious semiconductor project.
Sarma said the facility is expected to be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December or January.
"Regarding the semiconductor facility, I had come a few days ago. The clean room is already ready. They have started production of pilot chips," Sarma said.
The Chief Minister said the facility will have two clean rooms, of which the first has been completed while construction of the second is underway.
"This will be the largest and biggest Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility in the world. That's why this endeavour is a big success for the Indian Semiconductor Mission," Sarma said.
The facility, being developed by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) at Jagiroad in Morigaon district, involves an investment of around Rs 27,000 crore and is designed to have a production capacity of up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day.
The plant will use advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, including wire bonding, flip chip and integrated systems packaging, and is intended to cater to sectors such as automotive, electric vehicles, communications and consumer electronics.
Sarma said he expected eminent personalities from across the country to attend the inauguration.
The project was approved under the India Semiconductor Mission in February 2024. The Union government has described the Assam unit as India's first indigenous semiconductor assembly and test facility designed to serve both domestic and global markets.
The facility is also expected to generate significant employment in the region, with government estimates putting the combined direct and indirect employment potential at around 27,000 jobs.
