Assam: Sifung cultural festival celebrates Bodo heritage in Chirang

The Sifung Cultural Festival organized by Sifung Harimu Afat is underway at Roumari Thaijwguri in Chirang district, Assam. The two-day festival, which commenced on Monday January 28, 2024 showcases a vibrant mix of traditional performances cultural discussions, Competition and exhibitions highlighting Bodo heritage.

The festival features dance and drama competitions as well as discussions on Bodo culture and traditions.Visitors can explore exhibitions of GI-tagged Bodo attire displays of traditional Bodo musical instruments and locally produced items.

Speaking to India Today NE, Kwrwmdaw Basumatary, President of Sifung Harimu Afat shared insights into the organization's mission. Established in 2014 by Bodo youth in Roumari, Chirang, the organization aims to preserve and promote Bodo folk culture. It also focuses on educating the younger generation about traditional Bodo musical instruments. Over the years Bodo youth have actively conducted cultural awareness programs across Assam to keep the traditions alive.

"The participation of both young men and women in our initiatives is a testament to the growing interest in preserving our rich cultural heritage," said Basumatary.

On the second day of the festival a grand cultural procession was held drawing hundreds of participants. Various traditional activities and performances captivated the audience showcasing the depth of Bodo cultural heritage. An open meeting was also organized as part of the festival's closing events.
