In a significant step towards modernizing city infrastructure and reducing chronic traffic congestion, the Town Development Council has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Sribhumi. The announcement was made by newly appointed Chairman of the Council, Bishwarup Bhattacharya, during a press briefing on Thursday.
The ISBT, aimed at decongesting the heart of the city, had received an initial funding of ₹4 crore from the central government several years ago. However, due to delays and incomplete progress during the first phase, the remaining funds were withheld, stalling the project. As a result, two bus stands located within the city center have continued to cause traffic snarls, adding to public inconvenience.
In a renewed push, Chairman Bhattacharya declared that the private bus stand will be relocated to the ISBT site within the next 12 months. The government bus stand will also be shifted following the completion of the remaining construction work. These measures are expected to significantly streamline vehicular movement and reduce congestion in the core urban areas.
Addressing the symbolic importance of urban identity, Bhattacharya also announced the construction of a grand gateway at the city's primary entrance. Notably, after the region's transition from Karimganj to Sribhumi district, the city had no formal entry arch. The new gateway is intended to mark Sribhumi’s evolving civic stature.
The Town Development Council is reportedly rolling out multiple development projects to uplift urban living standards and promote structured growth across the district.
