The Import and Export Association of Assam's Sribhumi district has declared an indefinite suspension of all trade activities with Bangladesh following protests led by MLA Kamalaksha. The move comes amid escalating concerns over alleged inhuman atrocities against minority communities, arrests of Hindu monks, and growing anti-India sentiment in Bangladesh.
The decision, announced on Tuesday, involves four key import-export agencies in the district, effectively halting the movement of goods between the two nations. "No goods will be sent to Bangladesh, nor will any imports be received from there until further notice," stated a spokesperson for the association.
The suspension is in response to MLA Kamalaksha's demands for India to reconsider its trade ties with Bangladesh during this period of unrest. His protests have gained significant traction in Sribhumi and surrounding regions.
The impact of this decision is expected to ripple across the regional economy, particularly for industries dependent on cross-border trade. Local traders and businesses have expressed concerns over potential losses, while others have voiced support for the move, citing national solidarity and ethical considerations.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources indicate that discussions may be underway to address the issues fueling tensions. Both nations have yet to issue official statements on the trade suspension or the alleged incidents in Bangladesh.
