The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has called a series of protest programmes across the state beginning September 4, targeting what it describes as the unchecked influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh.
The agitation will open with an 11-hour hunger strike on September 4, followed by protest demonstrations on September 16, human chains on September 20, and mass rallies on September 23.
AASU leaders warned that large-scale encroachment by migrants has reached tribal belts, farmlands, satra lands, and forest reserves, threatening the political rights, culture, economy, and demographic balance of indigenous communities.
The organisation also raised concerns over what it claimed was the entry of fundamentalist groups alongside migrants, calling the situation a risk not only to Assam but to national security.
Reiterating its long-standing demand, AASU said the government must ensure the identification and expulsion of illegal migrants without delay.
