A surprise inspection at a government-run school in Assam’s Tinsukia district has revealed widespread irregularities, with officials flagging serious concerns over staff attendance, student management and the mid-day meal system.
The visit was conducted on Wednesday, April 22, at Sripuria Middle English School by District Elementary Education Officer Binti Sharma, accompanied by District Programme Officer Tridip Sharma Tamuli.
Officials present during the inspection said the headmistress arrived only after being alerted about the visit. When questioned about the delay, she reportedly attributed it to her pet dog’s illness, an explanation that drew attention but was not the primary concern for the inspecting team.
“What is more concerning is the overall condition of the school,” an official said.
The inspection found that, apart from one teacher, all others were either absent or reported late, raising questions about accountability. Classroom arrangements were also found lacking, with no proper segregation of students by grade. Several classes were being conducted jointly in a single room.
Basic academic processes appeared to be compromised. Student attendance was not being maintained regularly, and many students were unable to state their roll numbers, indicating gaps in record-keeping and supervision.
Officials also noted lapses in the management of non-teaching staff. The school’s chowkidar was absent without any formal leave application.
The mid-day meal scheme, a key welfare measure, was found to be non-functional at the time of inspection. Both cooks assigned to prepare meals were absent till 10:30 am, and there was no food stock available on the premises.
“The mid-day meal is often the only proper meal for many children. Any disruption is unacceptable,” an official said.
The findings have raised broader concerns about the functioning of primary education at the grassroots level in the district. Authorities confirmed that a detailed report is being prepared, and action will follow based on the findings.
While the headmistress’s explanation has drawn attention, officials indicated that the focus remains on systemic failures that require immediate correction.
