Over 200 runners gathered in Tamulpur, Assam, on Sunday morning to take part in the “Run for Happiness” marathon—an event aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse, child marriage, and road safety. The 21-kilometre race kicked off from Darangamela near the Indo-Bhutan border, drawing participation from youth and community members across the state.
Organised by the Tamulpur district administration under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, the marathon was more than a fitness challenge—it was a platform to bring attention to some of the region’s most pressing social issues.
Tamulpur Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Chakrabarty, Senior Superintendent of Police Diganta Kumar Choudhuri, and local MLA Jolen Daimary flagged off the race at dawn, signalling strong administrative backing for the campaign.
“Under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, this ‘Run for Happiness’ marathon was organised by the district administration to raise awareness about a drug-free society, child marriage, and road safety,” said DC Chakrabarty. “More than 200 men and women participated in the event, including members of Self-Help Groups. We are making continuous efforts to spread awareness among the people.”
The event was structured to recognise and reward commitment to the cause. Ten participants will receive awards worth a total of Rs 1 lakh. Officials expressed hope that the outreach would leave a long-term impact.
SSP Diganta Kumar Choudhuri emphasised the role of youth in shaping a healthier future: “I thank the District Administration for organising such an important program. It helps raise awareness among young people about the dangers of drug abuse. I hope this initiative will be successful and impactful.”
The event ended on a high note, with wide praise from locals and community leaders. Organisers say more such activities are in the pipeline as part of the district’s ongoing awareness efforts.
