The Dhubri zone tax department carried out a major raid on Wednesday night at a business dump located in the New Ghat area of Dhubri.
The premises, reportedly owned by local businessman Marfat Ali, came under the scanner for allegedly operating without adhering to Goods and Services Tax (GST) norms. The tax team spent several hours combing through the site and seized a large cache of documents believed to be vital for the ongoing investigation.
While officials have yet to disclose the exact extent of the suspected GST evasion, the scale of the raid and the volume of material confiscated point to substantial financial discrepancies. Sources within the department suggest that the operation may uncover significant irregularities in the tax records of the establishment.
This action is part of a broader, state-wide crackdown initiated by the Assam government aimed at tightening tax compliance and curbing revenue losses. Recent operations across multiple districts have brought to light widespread tax suppression practices among various businesses.
Authorities are currently examining the seized documents to assess the total value of the evaded tax. Legal proceedings against the owner, Marfat Ali, are likely to follow based on the findings.
