Anjali Gowala, whose mother works as a daily labourer at Namdang Tea Estate, has been elected vice president of Kumarpatty Gaon Panchayat under the 83rd Margherita Constituency in Tinsukia district.
The graduate from Margherita College won the election in Ward No. 6, where she resides with her family at the tea estate. Her victory represents a significant milestone for the daughter of Bipin Gowala and Mili Gowala, particularly given the financial struggles her family endured to support her education.
Mili Gowala, who works as a daily wage labourer at the tea estate, made considerable sacrifices to ensure her daughter could complete her studies. The family faced numerous hardships while supporting Anjali's academic pursuits through college.
Following her electoral success, Anjali expressed her determination to enter public service and work for community development. She has committed to serving all areas under the Kumarpatty Gaon Panchayat with dedication and integrity.
The announcement of her victory brought celebrations among neighbours and family members at the tea estate. Kumarpatty Village Panchayat President Amit Kol and representatives from the Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association honoured the newly elected vice president with traditional Assamese phoolam gamosha.
Local residents also felicitated Anjali with the ceremonial gamosha, recognising her achievement as a source of pride for the community.
The new vice president thanked Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma for her appointment and pledged to work toward the development of all areas under her jurisdiction. Her election marks a notable achievement for someone from a tea estate worker's family entering local governance in Assam.
