Assam: Tension grips Jorshimuli village after youth’s body found hidden in house

Tension gripped Jorshimuli village in Assam’s Kamrup district after the body of a young man was recovered under suspicious circumstances, triggering violent reactions from local residents and plunging the area into unrest.
According to police sources, the deceased has been identified as Atikul Islam, son of Rohij Ali of Merghanda village under Goroimari police station. His body was reportedly found concealed beneath a bed inside the house of Abdul Hakim, a resident of Jorshimuli.
The gruesome discovery sparked immediate outrage among villagers, who allegedly stormed Hakim’s residence, vandalised the property and set the house on fire. Locals claimed that Hakim’s family had long been suspected of involvement in drug-related activities, allegations that intensified following the recovery of the body.
Sources also indicated that the deceased youth was allegedly linked to drug abuse, adding complexity to the circumstances surrounding his death and prompting demands for a comprehensive investigation.
As the situation turned volatile, police teams from Jorshimuli, Goroimari and Chaygaon rushed to the spot to disperse the crowd and restore order. Security has been stepped up in the area to prevent further escalation.
Police officials said an in-depth probe has been launched to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the youth’s death and to determine individual culpability. No arrests have been officially confirmed so far.
Atikul Islam is survived by his parents, wife and a young daughter. Meanwhile, tension continues to simmer in Jorshimuli, with residents demanding a fair, transparent and exemplary investigation into the incident to ensure justice and prevent further unrest.
