The traditional Nou Khel (boat race), once a hallmark of Assamese culture, returned with grandeur at Champupara in Kamrup district as thousands gathered on the banks of the Kolohi River on Friday to witness a vibrant two-day competition organised by the Champupara Regional Youth Association.
The event saw spirited participation with over nine boats from across Assam competing in front of cheering crowds. To honour the winners, the organisers announced symbolic cash prizes of Rs 1,11,111 for the first position and Rs 77,777 for the second, adding to the cultural charm of the festival.
Attending as chief guest, MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed paid tribute to late singer Zubeen Garg, expressing grief at his sudden demise. He urged the state government to ensure accountability in the case and demanded that the probe be handed over to the CBI.
“All those responsible must face stringent punishment. Transparency in the investigation is a must,” he said.
Beyond the thrill of the races, the event carried a deeper resonance — reviving the age-old tradition of Nou Khel while also reflecting the collective sorrow of the Assamese people over the loss of one of their most beloved cultural icons.
