The tea tribe community, known for its vibrant cultural traditions, celebrated Tusu Puja in conjunction with Assam's beloved Bhogali Bihu. A key highlight of Tusu Puja is the traditional practice of cockfighting, which draws immense participation and excitement from the community.
This year, a grand cockfighting event was held on Wednesday in an open field at Ahom Gaon, Latabari, Bokakhat. The event saw a massive turnout, with thousands of spectators gathering to witness the spectacle. Participants from various districts, including Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dergaon, Nagaon, and Golaghat, arrived with their roosters, eager to compete in the traditional contest.
Organizers stated that the cockfighting competition has been an annual feature of Tusu Puja celebrations, conducted every year on the first day of Magh in the Assamese calendar. The event not only preserves a cultural legacy but also serves as a platform for community bonding and festive spirit.
While the event holds cultural significance for the tea tribe community, it continues to spark discussions about tradition and its place in modern society.
