A hands-on training programme on Eri silk spinning and natural dyeing was organised on Thursday, August 28 at Pachim Dhuli, Chaygaon, under the nationwide campaign ‘Mera Resham Mera Abhiman’. The event was conducted by the Regional Silk Technological Research Station (RSTRS), Guwahati, Central Silk Board, and aimed at empowering farmers, reelers, and women entrepreneurs engaged in Assam’s sericulture sector.
The session, coordinated by Abhishek Tripathi, Scientist-B, RSTRS Guwahati, showcased the significance of natural dyeing and modern spinning practices in enhancing silk productivity and quality while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Gulumani Kalita, President of the Chaygaon Gram Panchayat, emphasized the role of women’s empowerment through sericulture and urged rural women to adopt silk rearing as a path to economic independence. Digamber Prasad, Senior Technical Assistant, RSTRS Guwahati, demonstrated advanced reeling devices and guided participants on techniques to improve yarn quality.
Officials from the State Sericulture Department shared knowledge on improved rearing practices and highlighted government schemes designed to support farmers and entrepreneurs. Experts also addressed challenges such as irregular cocoon supply, market fluctuations, and the labour-intensive nature of the industry, while advocating for the integration of new technologies alongside traditional silk practices that define Assam’s globally renowned Eri and Muga silk.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from farmers, reelers, and women entrepreneurs, many of whom expressed keen interest in adopting advanced technologies to boost income. An interactive session concluded the event, allowing participants to exchange views and suggestions.
