Assam: Tree branches used to secure water pipes in Tinsukia, activist seeks action

Environmental activist and Environmental Protection Committee central president Rituraj Barua has objected to the alleged use of branches from trees planted by the committee to secure newly installed water supply pipelines in Chaliha Nagar, Tinsukia.

According to the committee, a private firm, Civil Engineers Enterprises Private Limited, installed water supply pipelines in the area at around 12:30 am. After laying the pipelines, the company allegedly used freshly cut tree branches as supports instead of bamboo or wooden poles.

The committee alleged that branches from trees planted as part of its environmental initiatives were broken and inserted into the ground to support the pipelines.

The incident has also raised concerns over the manner in which the water supply project is being executed. Barua alleged that the company has caused extensive damage to roads and other infrastructure in Tinsukia town over the past several months due to inadequate planning and execution of the project.

Barua has urged the Tinsukia District Commissioner to intervene and order an immediate halt to the company's ongoing work.
