Two youths were killed on the spot after a four-wheeler crashed into a roadside tree along National Highway 37 in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, triggering grief in their hometowns of Tinsukia and Tingkhong.
The deceased have been identified as Rishiraj Maut and Lakshyajyoti Phukan. Maut was from Tinsukia, while Phukan hailed from Tingkhong.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was travelling at high speed when the driver allegedly lost control and rammed into a tree near a turning on NH-37, close to the entry point of Dibrugarh town.
The incident has also raised concerns over road safety in the stretch. Local accounts have pointed to roadside vegetation obstructing traffic signs and the poor visibility of old or faded signboards, which may make it difficult for motorists to identify the turn.
However, the exact cause of the crash is yet to be officially established.
The deaths of the two youths during the Durga Puja festivities have cast a pall of gloom over Tinsukia and Tingkhong.
