Congress MLA Asif Nazar’s residence in Assam’s Morigaon witnessed tension on Saturday night after a gathering of Alim-Ulama raised “Congress go back” slogans and chanted “AIUDF Zindabad”.
Nazar had reportedly called more than 1,000 Alim-Ulama to his residence, where a mass prayer had been organised. The gathering later turned unruly, with chairs allegedly vandalised at the venue.
The incident comes amid heightened political activity in Assam, with Nazar having faced protests earlier over his association with the Congress.
On September 22, BJP and Congress workers reportedly clashed in Morigaon after BJP workers allegedly stopped Nazar’s vehicle at Garoimari and raised “Go Back Asif Nazar” slogans. A scuffle subsequently broke out between workers of the two parties.
The situation was brought under control after the intervention of the Morigaon Senior Superintendent of Police, who helped escort Nazar away from the spot.
The incident had come a day after violence was reported during Congress campaigning in Samaguri in connection with the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll. A Congress campaign convoy carrying Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel and other leaders was allegedly targeted with stones while travelling towards an election meeting.
Congress alleged that BJP supporters were behind the incident, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Samaguri episode was a clash between rival factions within the Congress. He had urged the state Congress leadership to resolve its internal differences and ensure that political disputes did not spill onto the streets.
