Assam: Violence erupts over illegal mining in Dalgaon, police personnel injured

A volatile situation unfolded at the Shilbari sand quarry in Dalgaon, Darrang district, following a violent confrontation between alleged sand mafias and local residents. The conflict, reportedly rooted in long-standing disputes over illegal sand mining in the Dhansiri River, escalated when police forces arrived to restore order and were subsequently attacked.

Among the injured are Sub-Inspector Rupankar Das and three other police personnel, who were immediately admitted to Mangaldoi Civil Hospital for treatment. The incident prompted the swift deployment of additional law enforcement, including the Additional Superintendent of Police, who is currently overseeing the situation on the ground.

Authorities have confirmed that the situation is now under control; however, a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the individuals responsible for the assault on the police officers.

Local organizations and community members have for years voiced concerns over unregulated sand extraction from the Dhansiri River, raising alarms over environmental degradation and unchecked criminal activity. This incident has reignited tensions in the surrounding areas, with residents demanding swift action against the culprits and stricter regulation of quarry operations.
