Assam: We 'Gorkhas' do not want separate land...we just want our land rights, says Gorkha Development Council Chairman

The Khanapara Veterinary Field in Guwahati has become the epicenter of the 17th Central Biennial Conference of the All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) and the 2nd North-East Gorkha Festival. This four-day celebration running from December 24th to the 27th promises to showcase the rich heritage of the Gorkha community through an array of events.

In an exclusive interview with India Today NE, Prem Tamang, Chairman of the Gorkha Development Council (GDC), explained the primary agenda of the festival – to unite all eight northeastern states culturally. Tamang stated the interconnected nature of the northeastern states, citing issues like border disputes in Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya. He stressed the need to bring together Gorkha brothers and sisters spread across the region.

"The All Assam Gorkha Students Union aims to unite all Gorkhas of the northeast through cultural mediums," Tamang said. The festival, he explained seeks to preserve the diverse cultural identity of the Gorkhas encompassing various tribes, foods and traditions.

Tamang recalled that the festival was first held in Digboi, Tinuskia, where Gorkhas from all northeast states participated. As Assam plays host this year, Tamang highlighted the unique cultures, scripts and traditions of the 13 Gorkha tribes in India, including Rai, Tamang, Magar and Limboo.

"In the 21st century, many urban Gorkhas have forgotten their culture and traditions. It's crucial to teach them about the importance of Gorkha cultures, customs, and traditions to preserve our identity," Tamang expressed, underlining the significance of keeping languages and traditions alive.

Addressing Gorkha issues in Assam, Tamang, who has been the Chairman of the Gorkha Development Council since 2020 stated the community's desire for cultural preservation. He outlined demands for reservation in education, the establishment of a Gorkha autonomous council and constitutional safeguards for Gorkha identity.

"Lands rights have been an age-old issue for Gorkhas. We don't seek separate land; we demand our land rights," Tamang asserted highlighting the Gorkhas' plea for constitutional safeguards and identity. The Chairman also addressed Clause 6 demands expressing concerns about being included in the friendship treaty.

The 2nd North-East Gorkha Festival, organized by AAGSU, is not just a celebration of Gorkha culture but a platform for cultural exchange among various indigenous tribes in the North-East. Through traditional performances, culinary showcases and exhibitions, the festival aims to foster unity and understanding among the diverse communities residing in the region.
