A woman in Assam’s Nalbari district allegedly threw her six-month-old son into a water body, leading to his death and sparking widespread shock and grief across the region.
The incident took place in Jowardi village, where Gitanjali Barman, wife of daily wage worker Nripen Barman, is accused of committing the act.
The tragedy unfolded in a family struggling with extreme poverty, though the exact motive behind the mother’s actions remains unclear.
Police sources suggest that domestic discord could be a possible trigger, but an official confirmation is still awaited. The Belsor police reached the spot shortly after the incident was reported and have begun a thorough investigation.
The child’s body was recovered, and authorities are expected to carry out further inquiries, including psychological evaluation of the mother and statements from the family and neighbours.
