Assam woman dies during sterilisation surgery at Margherita hospital, protests block NH-38 in Digboi

The death of a 30-year-old woman allegedly during a sterilisation surgery at Margherita Civil Hospital triggered protests in Digboi on September 4, with several tribal student and community organisations blocking National Highway 38 and demanding justice.

Members of the Tea Tribes Students Association, Adivasi Students Association and Munda Mahasabha staged the protest seeking action over the death of Lalita Munda, a resident of Naziratting No. 3 Line in Digboi.

According to the protesters, Munda had gone to Margherita Civil Hospital on September 3 to undergo a sterilisation procedure. She allegedly died while the surgery was being performed.

The protesters have alleged medical negligence and demanded the arrest of the doctor who allegedly performed the procedure.

Munda was a mother of three children. The protesting organisations have demanded a one-time compensation of Rs 20 lakh for her family, particularly for the future welfare of her three children.

The road blockade caused disruption to traffic on NH-38 as protesters pressed for accountability and compensation.

The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and the allegations of medical negligence are yet to be independently established.
