In a shocking and disturbing incident in Sarupeta, Bajali district, Assam 19-year-old Monika Barman was allegedly raped, murdered, and then deliberately hanged by her former lover, Arif Ahmed, in a failed attempt to conceal the heinous crime as a suicide.
Police sources indicate that Arif Ahmed, who had previously been in a relationship with Monika, could not come to terms with her moving on and finding a new romantic partner. Fuelled by intense jealousy and rage, Arif reportedly resorted to blackmail, using intimate photographs from their past relationship.
Monika's family had been living as Indian citizens near Arif Ahmed's residence for 15 years.
In the early hours of the incident, around 4 a.m., Arif allegedly coerced Monika out of her home through threats and intimidation. A heated argument ensued, during which Arif raped the victim before strangling her to death.
To deceive investigators, the accused then suspended Monika's body from a ceiling fan in a nearby room, meticulously staging the scene to resemble a suicide.
However, a thorough investigation by Bajali police at the crime scene quickly exposed the truth behind the horrific event. Arif Ahmed has since been arrested and taken into custody.
