A case of alleged deceit in marriage has surfaced from Assam's Sribhumi district, where a tribal woman discovered her husband’s true identity only after giving birth to a child.
The incident, reported from Chandrapur village in the Baja Rishda area of Patharkandi constituency, has sparked local outrage.
According to sources, a young woman named Ringhakating Charai was married to a man who presented himself as a Hindu but was later identified as a Muslim man named Fadil.
The couple had moved to Bengaluru after marriage, where they had a child. It was only after the child’s birth that the woman learned of her husband's actual religious background. Feeling betrayed, she fled with her child and returned to her native village in Assam.
Adding to the complexity of the case, the woman's mother, Khante Charai, had converted to Christianity nearly a decade ago, allegedly under the influence of clergy.
However, following this recent incident, both mother and daughter participated in a 'Ghar Wapsi' program organized by the RSS-affiliated Dharma Jagran Manch, where they formally reconverted to Hinduism.
The event was conducted with full religious rituals, reinstating both women to their original faith. The case has stirred discussions on religious conversions and identity deception, with various organizations calling for strict measures against such incidents.
Local authorities are yet to comment on any legal actions against Fadil. Meanwhile, the community continues to debate the broader implications of religious conversions and interfaith marriages in the region.
