Dhubri witnessed heightened tension on January 29, as the district committee of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staged a massive protest against the Assam government, alleging a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise minority communities through the issuance of “fake notices” and the illegal deletion of names from official records.
The protest, marked by a large turnout and high-pitched slogans, was led by Dhubri MLA Nazrul Haque and Gauripur MLA Nizanur Rahman. Party leaders, workers, and supporters marched from the AIUDF district office to the office of the Dhubri District Commissioner, where they submitted a memorandum detailing their demands.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Nazrul Haque accused the state administration of systematically removing the names of Indian minority citizens under the pretext of verification. He demanded immediate legal action against individuals filing what he described as “baseless and fraudulent” complaints against minorities, and called for an immediate halt to the “illegal and arbitrary” deletion of names from state databases. Haque also announced that the party is preparing to take legal recourse against recent derogatory remarks directed at the Miya community.
The situation outside the District Commissioner’s office remained charged as protesters raised slogans such as “BJP Go Back” and “Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Murdabad,” accusing the present leadership of creating fear and insecurity among minority populations.
“We will not tolerate the harassment of genuine Indian citizens through fake notices. This is a deliberate attempt to marginalise a particular community, and we are prepared to take this fight to the Supreme Court,” said MLA Nizanur Rahman.
AIUDF leaders stated that the memorandum submitted to the District Commissioner demanded a transparent investigation into the issuance of recent notices and safeguards to prevent the alleged misuse of administrative processes. The protest reflects a hardening of the party’s stance as citizenship verification and administrative actions continue to trigger political and communal debate across Assam.
