Assam's Kalgachia tailor stitches national flags for 35 years, earns public praise

As Independence Day approaches, a tailor in Kalgachia has been quietly spreading the spirit of patriotism by stitching the national flag by hand for nearly 35 years.

 

Piyar Ali, who earns his livelihood as a tailor at Kalgachia market in Barpeta district, has been making the Tricolour every year ahead of Independence Day and Republic Day.

 

Ali began making national flags after learning tailoring in the early years of his career. Initially, he stitched only a few flags and distributed them among people in the char and riverine areas on Independence Day.

 

Over the years, stitching the national flag has become an annual tradition for Ali. As August 15 and January 26 approach, he takes up the task with renewed enthusiasm, driven by his deep sense of patriotism.

 

This year too, Ali has prepared national flags ahead of the 80th Independence Day celebrations. His handmade flags are not limited to Kalgachia but are also supplied to areas across Barpeta, Mandia, Barbhita, Mayanbari, Jaipur, Tarakandi, Baghbar, Goalpara and Bongaigaon.

 

While his unique contribution has earned appreciation from local residents, Ali continues his work without seeking recognition, making the Tricolour by hand as his own way of celebrating the nation.
